The aim of this COVID -19 Response project to address the immediate needs at local level. The livelihoods of people and country’s economy are severely affected due to ongoing nationwide lock down. Daily wage workers are greatly affected and lost their jobs. This emergency was categorised for Oxfam as a CAT 1. This project will work on the COVID-19 preparedness and response programme in Nepal with reference to the above country and respective working areas context. Oxfam’s commits to work together with the Government of Nepal on emergency response in line with our Humanitarian Response objective. This project will support Nepal Government’s COVID-19 preparedness and Response Plan & Policy.

Oxfam in Nepal further aims to extend its intervention together with its implementing partners to the districts of Saptari, Sarlahi, Rautahat, Singhupalchowk, Lalitpur, Surkhet, Banke, Dhangadhi, Kanchanpur, Dadeldhura, Baitadi and Darchula districts. in line with government policy and guidelines. The target districts may be increased based on the availability of the funds in the coming days.  


Input: 

Coordination meeting with local, provincial and national government on MMH and overall response based on BCC strategy

Focus group discussions (if feasible) with existing groups (e.g., mother’s groups, men and children’s groups) – if context permitting. - Partners Nepal

Implementation of and monitoring use of bucket with tap and lid, hygiene items along with MMH behavior for handwashing at household level - Partners Nepal

Installation of foot-oriented hand washing station with regular water supply and drainage facilities at institutions, market place - Partners Nepal

Hand washing station at HHs level (Bucket with tap and lid) - Partners Nepal

Development of behavior change communication (BCC) strategy based on the local context for Community Health and Hygiene Promotion adopting MMH as one of the key programmes – roles, responsibilities and care work norms - Partners Nepal

Implementation of behavior change communication strategy based on local context including use of adapted Mums Magic Hands for Covid-19 - Partners Nepal

Hygiene Kit and mosquito net distribution in quarantine, isolation centers and communities

Orientation on hygiene kit and distribution to targeted beneficiaries

Support to local government to provide numbers of bed, and safety measure for quarantine centers,

Support fix and install temporary toilet in quarantine Centre-coordination

Support to establish foot operated hand washing station,

Dignity Kit

Established health desk, and help desk to share message regarding, COVID-19, GBV, referral mechanisms and linked with likeminded government agencies for protection issue in local level

Sharing the real experiences of the handwashing focusing on MMH and Covid-19 and gender /care work through story- telling, question answers, video blog, interview Partners Nepal

Support health and help desk in municipality to 1) provide information on culturally appropriate hygiene and health practices and behaviors focusing on MMH and 2) to dispel fake information on Covid-19 - Partners Nepal

Gender sensitive awareness raising through local FM radio, mobile messaging, mobile booths, print media, social media, testimonials and local service providers such as disc home - Partners Nepal

Draw attention to handwashing messages by rotation of message in strategic location - Partners Nepal

Psychosocial Counselling service at transit point including Psychological First Aid (PFA) and Psychosocial Support (PSS)

Anti-stigma message including protection and GBV messaging (Protection and SGBV flyer distribution)

Outputs: 

1.1    Local authorities understand vulnerabilities and behavioural triggers and provide supportive environment

1.2    Target population (Men, women and elderly people, people with underlying health conditions) know about appropriate hand-washing to prevent and reduce COVID-19 infection risks

1.3    Holding centres, Quarantines, Isolation and Vulnerable people receive WaSH services for prevention of COVID-19 transmission

2.1` Stigma is mitigated through responsive information

2.2 Influencing with local leaders supports improved gender norms


Outcome:
  1. Sustained Improvement in hygiene and health behaviours that limit the Spread of COVID -19.
  2. Gender norms promote equal distribution of hygiene and health related care work among women and men at the household and community level.

Impact: 

Poor, vulnerable and marginalised people get adequate awareness and inclusive hand washing facilities to prevent and reduce the spread of the COVID-19 and are able to strengthen the health resilience.
