This initiative supports the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) South Asia Strategic Plan 2010-2015 and forms part of the Government's commitment to advance Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 5 (improve maternal health) in South Asia. The South Asia region has the highest rates of maternal and neonatal deaths and unmet demand for contraception in the Asia-Pacific. The funding of this initiative helps reduce maternal deaths in South Asia by improving equitable access for underserved groups to a range of reproductive health services and education including family planning. These goals are met by IPPF's South Asia Strategic Plan which focuses on 4 priority areas: 1) ensuring young people have access and rights to services and education; 2) reducing social, cultural and economic barriers that impede access; 3) HIV/AIDS prevention and care; and 4) reducing unsafe abortion. The total value of this multi-country initiative is up to $11 million over 3 years, starting 2010-11.
