• Preparation of participatory water and sanitation master plans;
• 16 pilot demonstration projects (8 water system and 8 sanitation facilities) – water and sanitation facilities that will support in improving the environmental health and sanitation situation and sanitation practices of the target communities;
• Increased coverage and access of water and sanitation facilities resulting through increased awareness and capacities of both state and non-state actors to deliver services as per plans.

The project includes urban and peri-urban clusters of 3 western districts-the cluster covers 5 municipalities and 3 small towns.

The major activities include-

• Develop participatory WATSAN Master Plans for 5 municipalities\ 3 VDCs;
• Promotion of 4 appropriate point of use- Simple Household Water Treatment Technologies from Practical Action’s “Healthy Homes” approach;
• Empowering and Capacity Building of 200 female community health volunteers (FCHV) and 25 mother leaders from mother groups for better sanitation and hygiene behavior. Each FCHV will further deliver the message to 50 women while the mother leaders reach out to 10,000 target women;
• Behavioral change campaigns (hand-washing campaigns, street theatres, community radio programs and inter community group competitions) in 16 communities, 20 health centers and 4 municipalities.

Institutionalization of pro poor water and sanitation governance by municipal authorities

• Improved access to safe drinking water, better sanitation facilities and hygiene practices among 50,000 people including women and children;
• Improved partnerships between state and non-state actors; and institutionalization of environmental health improvement measures through improved linkages between state, non-state and private sector actors;
• Reduction in the incidences of water-borne diseases and health costs among target households by 25%.
